Rural Garbage Collection And Litter Act 2010

Lautoka City Council is concerned about residents throwing garbage and other waste indiscriminately in public place.

The council through subsidy provided by the Government is providing garbage collection services in selected rural areas from Naviyago village to Lomolomo village along main highway.

The service is just for collection of household waste which includes kitchen wastes but do not include tree branches, soil, construction wastes, white goods or industrial wastes.

Residents are required to use proper garbage pans for disposal or use high raised collection stands to be managed by community.

Recently, residents have been warned and booked for litter offences as all sorts of waste apart from garbage was discharged.

An on-spot litter fine of $40.00 is imposed as some residents are in habit of discharging on non-collection days. Residents are to refrain from such practices and only dispose of Garbage such as Kitchen wastes on collection days only.

A resident was issued $40.00 fine in one of the settlements when other residents raised concerns of non-adherence of systems in place despite having knowledge.
