Household Waste Generation and Composition Survey conducted for LCC

Household Waste Generation and Composition Survey is currently being conducted for LCC which is proudly supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Extracting of current baseline data and information is crucial to successful waste management planning. The last waste composition and composition survey conducted for the Council was in 2008 which was also financed by JICA under Fiji’s 3Rs Project.

Household Waste Generation and Composition Survey conducted for LCC

The survey will be conducted for 7 consecutive days from the same 50 households which have been selected randomly from urban and peri-urban areas. The study assesses the nature of solid waste generated from households.

The survey involves:

  1. Public opinion survey using standard questionnaire interview to first gather information related to waste management practices by households and extract citizen’s opinion about waste management services provided by the Council.
  2. Collection of household garbage and weighing to determine waste generation amount.
  3. Waste characterization/composition survey is conducted with collected waste. The collected waste is segregated according to different types of wastes like plastics, fabrics, organics, glass, ceramic, paper, cartons etc. The segregated wastes are then weighed separately. The study determines the waste composition according to the various categories.
  4. The data collected is then analyzed and presented in summary.
